YOU ARE THE 5TH GOSPEL: AN INTERVIEW WITH BOBBY CONWAY
A popular saying admonishes, “You may be the only Bible some people read.” What are the critical scriptural issues involved in acting out your faith in front of a watching and sometimes hostile world?

Bible Gateway interviewed speaker, author, and pastor Bobby Conway about his book, The Fifth Gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, You (Harvest House Publishers, 2014).

Q: Some people might fixate on the “lost Gospels” or the Gnostic Gospels. But that’s not what you’re talking about, is it?

Dr. Conway: That’s correct. What I’m saying is many Christian’s have gone incognito for Jesus. God’s not looking for secret service agents in the church. Sadly, many Christian’s believe they’ve got this 9-5 window each week where they are free to evangelistically detach from missional living. The reality is many in the church have gone ‘missionally’ mute. The Fifth Gospel is an invitation to live less monastic and more missional. It’s a plea that asks, “Will the real Christian please stand up?” …. Read this in full at

CHRISTIANITY TODAY ANNOUNCES ‘THE BEHEMOTH,’ A MAGAZINE THAT MARVELS AT GOD’S CREATION
Christianity Today, the media ministry founded by Billy Graham in 1956, announced today its most daring publication to date in The Behemoth. This ad-free, biweekly publication aims to help people behold the glory of God all around them, in the worlds of science, history, theology, medicine, sociology, Bible, and personal narrative. The digital magazine is available on the iPad through an app in the iTunes store or on any device through the responsive website at http://BehemothMag.com

The Behemoth gets its provocative name from the biblical beast God uses in the book of Job that forces Job to stop asking questions but simply marvel at God’s creation. Managing Editor Ted Olsen says, “We want to look at God’s creation, God’s history, God’s people, and the glorious study of God,” he says. “In these and future articles, more than anything else, we want to behold. Not exhort, scold, theorize, pontificate, but simply marvel.” …. Read this in full at

DESPITE PERSECUTION, THE BIBLE PREVAILS
by Ben Hawkins
The nature of God’s Word is to be persecuted,” wrote the 16th-century Reformer William Tyndale, whose biblical translations and writings are showcased among 450 other rare biblical and historical artifacts here at “Passages: Treasures of the Bible,” an exhibition of items from the Oklahoma-based Green Collection.

Among the artifacts displayed at “Passages,” none show the truth of Tyndale’s statement more vividly than a collection of Hebrew scrolls that survived the Holocaust. Some scrolls had been burned. Others had been confiscated and hidden away. Still others had been desecrated and reused to make wallpaper, slippers, satchels and notebook covers.

Nevertheless, God’s Word has survived. As this collection shows, “Passages” traces the history of God’s Word, a history of both persecution and of endurance…. Read this in full at

BIBLE LEFT IN NORTH KOREAN SAILOR’S CLUB TRIGGERED US TOURIST’S ARREST
American tourist Jeffrey Fowle was arrested by North Korean authorities for leaving a bible under a bin in the toilet at a club for foreign sailors, a source familiar with Fowle’s case told Reuters.

During his ten day trip to North Korea, Fowle’s fellow travelers described the middle-aged street repairs worker from Miamisburg, Ohio as a warm, amiable, quiet man.

On May 4, towards the end of an evening spent eating and drinking in Chongjin, a large industrial city on North Korea’s east coast, Fowle’s action led to him being thrown in jail, where he is awaiting trial in one of the world’s most inhospitable countries.

He left a bilingual English-Korean bible in the restaurant he and his fellow travelers were about to leave, the source, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitivities surrounding the case, told Reuters…. Read this in full at

LONG-LOST BIBLE FINDS ITS WAY HOME FROM NEW ZEALAND TO SOUTH AFRICA
An international search to return one of the first Bibles printed in Afrikaans has been traced back to its family.

For at least a decade, New Zealand woman Jill Porter has been looking for the owner of the Bible, which was lost during World War II, and she recently found the South African relatives who didn’t know what they had been missing…. Read this in full at

3 SPIRITUAL LESSONS FROM THE TOUR DE FRANCE
by Dudley Rutherford
If you had told me a couple of years ago that I would one day ride 60 to 70 miles on a road bicycle for fun, I don’t think I would have believed you. But years of playing basketball and golf had finally caught up to me, causing major damage to the meniscus cartilage in my knee. A good friend of mine recommended cycling as a way to stay in shape and maintain the competitiveness I love about sports, but with less strain on my knees. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Now that I’m an avid cyclist, the Tour de France takes on a whole new meaning for me. I would never be able to race at the speed of the professionals, but I got to thinking about what believers can learn from the Tour de France to obtain victory in our spiritual walks.(The Apostle Paul actually compares the Christian life to a race in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27.)

Here are three biblical lessons we glean from the Tour de France on how to be victorious whether we are facing a personal battle or striving to accomplish something extraordinary:…. Read this in full at

STRETCH
Will God ever ask you to do something you are not able to do? The answer is yes- all the time! It must be that way, for God’s glory and kingdom. If we function according to our ability alone, we get the glory; if we function according to the power of the Spirit within us, God gets the glory. He wants to reveal Himself to a watching world.”

ARE YOU SENDING MIXED MESSAGES?
by Clare De Graaf
If this question were asked of your children, ages 14-19, what do you think their answer would be? “What do you believe your mother and father most expect of you, personal achievement – excellence in school or sports, or that you are kind and you care for others? (you can pick only one)”

In a national survey of 10,000 middle and high school students conducted by Harvard University, 80% of students said their parents value success over character.

I’ll bet your first reaction was like mine. “Not my kids! I’m sure they would think doing good and being good is more important to Susan and me than hard work and achievement!”

Our children are 10-25 years out of school, so I guess I’ll never know. But if you have children or grandchildren in this age group, please consider these insightful observations and recommendations by the surveyors. (The Christian comments and suggestions are mine.)…. Read this in full at

THE BOOK THAT EVERYONE READ DURING WORLD WAR I
On 28 July 1914, the first shots of World War I were fired. Over the following four years, 16 million lives were lost as 65 million men from 32 countries were drawn into the conflict. The book that was read and cherished by people on both sides of the conflict was the Bible.

To commemorate the First World War centenary, Bible Society in England and Wales has been looking back at its records to trace the extent and impact of its Scripture distribution during the war years. What they have found is impressive: despite many logistical challenges, it distributed more than nine million Scriptures in 80 languages to members of the Armed Forces and prisoners of war on all sides…. GOD’S WORD IS A RELIABLE SOURCE OF DIRECTION TO LEAD YOU TO HAPPINESS
by Norman Vincent Peale
It has been assumed by some who do not know, that Christianity is a gloomy religion. But that’s not what the Bible shows us! Book after book, page after page, it give us reasons to be joyful.

It may seem odd that Christianity’s chief emblem is the Cross, a symbol of suffering. But, in a higher sense, the Cross is the symbol of glorious victory. Faith in the Cross of Christ gives victory and cleanness and salvation, and therefore true Christians are always happy. They are constantly rejoicing. “Be glad in the Lord always! Again I say, be glad!” (Philippians 4:4)…. Read this in full at

HMMMMMMM
Can a mortal ask questions which God finds unanswerable? Quite easily, I should think. All nonsense questions are unanswerable. How many hours are there in a mile? Is yellow square or round? Probably half the questions we ask – half our great theological and metaphysical problems – are like that.”
– C. S. Lewis

COLORBLIND ARTIST FEELS DRAWN TO DRAW CHRIST
by Tyler Agnew
Colorblind artist Lance Brown spreads the gospel with paint.

I shouldn’t be able to excel in the field of art, but God has allowed me to,” said Brown, who calls his ministry Painted Christ. “This is part of my testimony.”

But Brown always seeks to redirect attention away from himself, guiding his audience to focus on Jesus.

A band provides background music while he uses a canvas to create large-scale Jesus paintings that tell a visual story about Christ’s victory over sin and death.

I feel like God uses these paintings to speak to everyone individually,” Brown said. “It may mean something different to you than it does to me.”

As a child, Brown loved to draw. His mom was an artist, and the craft came naturally to him in spite of his colorblindness as he learned to compensate for his difficulty in distinguishing shades of color…. Read this in full at

A 15th-century Bible that changed the way books were read and disseminated is on display in Melbourne.

The Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed using mechanical moveable type.

The book is recognised as sparking a book printing revolution in western civilisation, that allowed information and ideas to be easily shared.

The edition on display in Melbourne is one of just nine remaining complete copies and is on show as part of Rare Book Week at the University of Melbourne…. Read this in full at

AN EXAMINATION OF 52 SCRIPTURE QUESTIONS
In GuideStone President O.S. Hawkins’ newest book, he examines difficult questions recorded in Scripture, as well as the answers the Bible reveals.

“While devotionally reading through the Gospels some time back, I was captured by the number of questions Jesus asked,” Hawkins said. “Think about it — the Gospels record some 150 questions that escaped the lips of our omniscient Lord. I pondered why He, of all people, needed to ask questions. As we study, we see Scripture is replete with hard questions asked by those in that great cloud of witnesses, and the God-honoring answers we can discover.”

“The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer,” was written with three audiences in mind, Hawkins said: for individuals who could use it as a weekly devotional guide, for those who could use it as a means to introduce family and friends to the Bible and for pastors who want a simple guide to lead their people through a year’s study on the questions found in Scripture. Each chapter focuses on one question and provides an outline of the passage and the answers in Scripture…. Read this in full at

MILLENNIALS WARN CHURCHES AGAINST CATERING TO THEIR GENERATION
by Jeff Brumley
Many American congregations are modernizing worship in an effort to lure Millennials and other young people either into church or back to church.

For some, the instinct is to radically alter the old model: out with the organ, in with the Fender [guitar],” Christian writer Andrea Palpant Dilley wrote recently for Churchleaders.com.

But that could be a big mistake, Dilley said, because not all Millennials want the same thing when it comes to worship. It’s also risky because Millennials, like anyone else, often change their minds.

Dilley was raised Presbyterian but traded its rituals for hipper, nondenominational churches before returning to more liturgical, traditional sanctuaries…. Read this in full at

FRANCES WILLARD, 1839-1898
by Leslie Hammond
Two things must occupy your thinking powers to the exclusion of every other thing: first, the goal; and second, the momentum requisite to reach it.”

Remarkably, when Frances Willard penned these words three years before her death, she was not looking back at her work as leader of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, her tenure as a college and university administrator, her tireless stumping for women’s suffrage, her battle against prostitution, her advocacy of prison reform, or any of her other social causes — but was rather referring to her late-life attempt to master the riding of a bicycle! …. SADDLE UP FOR JESUS: DUNLAP ‘COWBOY CHURCH’ ISN’T ABOUT COWBOYS
by Kevin Hardy
After the pony rides but before the line dancing, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse galloped onto the scene.

Over the loudspeaker, an exaggerated voice billowed verses from the book of Revelation as the four horses solemnly circled the gravel arena. It was, as some joked, a Dixie Stampede for Jesus.

A white horse with a conqueror atop was armed with bow and crown. A rider dressed in red wielded a sword. A black horse with a rider carried a balance. A fourth, a pale horse, carried a rider and its name was death. A child draped in a crimson cloth and a Halloween mask followed. He was supposed to be the devil.

“There is no doubt that this is going to happen,” said Chris Young, preaching about the end times. “This is going to happen if you believe. If you don’t believe, this is still going to happen.” …. Read this in full at

WATER WORKS: WHY BAPTISM IS ESSENTIAL
by Roger E. Olson
Movies and TV shows have probably included more scenes of baptism than any other distinctly Christian ritual—wedding ceremonies aside. One that stands out as especially detailed (yet problematic) is the baptism of an escaped convict in O Brother, Where Art Thou? Delmar and his companions, Pete and Ulysses, are on the run from a posse when they hear heavenly singing in the forest. The song is “Down to the River to Pray,” and it’s being sung by a parade of white-robed baptismal candidates moving toward a river where a preacher is dunking them under water. Delmar joins the group and comes up from the water, shouting, “The preacher done washed all my sins and transgressions!”—much to the amusement and cynical dismay of Ulysses.

Many Christians find the scene bittersweet. On the one hand, its solemnity, sincerity, and beauty are inspiring. On the other, it raises questions about how well moviemakers understand baptism. The preacher dips the baptismal candidates almost mechanically—quickly and without words. He doesn’t even know who Delmar is, and Delmar’s declaration has little in common with the beliefs of churches that dunk converts in a river (or baptize by another method)…. Read this in full at

IN CHURCH ATTICS, CLUES TO THE PRIVATE LIFE OF EARLY AMERICA
by Michael Paulson
Sarah Blanchard was sorry she skipped a worship service. Sarah Wood apologized for denouncing infant baptisms. And as for the Cheneys, Joseph and Abigail? Well, “with shame, humiliation, and sorrow,” they acknowledged having had sex before marriage.

More than 250 years ago, their confessions of sin were dutifully logged by the minister of the church here, alongside records of baptisms, marriages and deaths, notes about meetings heated and routine, accounts of finances, texts of sermons, and, in some cases, personal accounts of conversion experiences from young adults…. ON THE IMPROV CIRCUIT, COMEDIAN FINDS A READY AUDIENCE FOR THE GOSPEL

Spreading the gospel with a laugh — that’s the mission of Dave Ebert and his Christian improvisation troupe, hahahAmen.

Ebert, a 2004 graduate of Baptist-affiliated Bluefield College, founded the group with three other Christian friends in 2013 in Chicago to provide family-friendly comedy shows for events, churches and other organizations and activities.

We love God. We love Jesus, and we love using our gifts to honor and glorify God,” said Ebert, who studied English and communications while a student at the Virginia college. “We live by the motto, ‘Our Gifts for God’s Glory.’ We are all trained, professional improvisers, who want to do more than the secular comedy that tends to be full of vulgarities.” …. US STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT: RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION MAKES MIGRANTS OUT OF MILLIONS
by Brian Pellot
And then there were nine. Secretary of State John Kerry announced on July 28 that Turkmenistan has joined the State Department’s list of worst religious freedom offenders.

The State Department’s “Countries of Particular Concern” list had remained static since 2006, when eight countries — Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Uzbekistan — were designated as CPCs.

Justifying the addition of Turkmenistan, Kerry cited reports of people detained, beaten and tortured for their beliefs, prohibited from wearing religious attire and fined for distributing religious materials…. Read this in full at

CHINA REMOVES CROSSES FROM TWO MORE CHURCHES IN CRACKDOWN
In another sign of the authorities’ efforts to contain one of China’s fastest-growing religions, a government demolition campaign against public symbols of the Christian faith has toppled crosses at two more churches in the coastal province of Zhejiang, according to residents there.

On July 28, public security officials in the city of Wenzhou used a crane and blowtorch to cut loose the red, 10-foot crucifix that had adorned the Longgang Township Gratitude Church, witnesses said. Unlike in previous confrontations between the police and parishioners that have unfolded in recent months, the congregants did not offer resistance…. Read this in full at

THIS WEEK’S HYMN: ALL BEAUTIFUL THE MARCH OF DAYS
Words: Frances W. Wile, 1912
Music: traditional English melody; arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1906

All beautiful the march of days, as seasons come and go;
The Hand that shaped the rose hath wrought the crystal of the snow;
Hath sent the hoary frost of Heav’n, the flowing waters sealed,
And laid a silent loveliness on hill and wood and field.

O’er white expanses sparkling pure the radiant morns unfold;
The solemn splendors of the night burn brighter than the cold;
Life mounts in every throbbing vein, love deepens round the hearth,
And clearer sounds the angel hymn, “Good will to men on earth.”

O Thou from Whose unfathomed law the year in beauty flows,
Thyself the vision passing by in crystal and in rose,
Day unto day doth utter speech, and night to night proclaim,
In ever changing words of light, the wonder of Thy Name.

FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP
THAT YOU MIGHT BELIEVE
Aired 8/1/2014 @ 10:00PM central
Over the past few weeks God has impressed upon me that the body of Christ (as a whole) has forgotten the message of the gospel. We have an improper relationship with “mammon” and are looking for “tickling ears” messages. We have called the gospel a “kingdom” to be ruled here on earth as well as the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Which one is it?!? Why did Jesus die on the cross?!? To improve your bank account? To get a bigger/better house/car? I submit that the gospel is THE saving grace that we ALL should be sharing & teaching others to share. We’re going to explore our responsibilities as redeemed members of the body of Christ.
