THE GREAT DECLINE: 61 YEARS OF RELIGIOSITY IN ONE GRAPH, 2013 HITS A NEW LOW
by Tobin Grant
Religiosity in the United States is in the midst of what might be called ‘The Great Decline.’ Previous declines in religion pale in comparison. Over the past 15 years, the drop in religiosity has been twice as great as the decline of the 1960s and 1970s.

Last year brought a continuation of this decline. 2013 was a new low for the level of religiosity in the country.

How do we track this massive change in American religion? We start with information from rigorous, scientific surveys on worship service attendance, membership in congregations, prayer, and feelings toward religion. We then use a computer algorithm to track over 400 survey results over the past 60 years. The result is one measure that charts changes to religiosity through the years…. Read this in full at

TEN OBSTACLES THAT GET IN THE WAY OF BIBLE FLUENCY
At the Conference on the Bible in American Life, Diane Jacobson, professor of Old Testament, listed ten common challenges that get in the way of becoming biblically fluent:

1. Shame. Many people are ashamed of what they don’t know about the Bible. Understandably, if somewhat ironically, that means they avoid Bible studies and other useful activities where their ignorance might be exposed.

2. Busy-ness. This doesn’t need much explanation—people face many different demands on their time, and don’t feel that they can fit the Bible into their schedules.

3. Reading the Bible can be scary. The Bible is different than most other books — for example, starting at the beginning and reading through to the end, the way we read most other books, isn’t necessarily the best way to read the Bible. On top of that, the Bible’s spiritual heft can make it intimidating to approach. Jacobson also pointed out that simply reading is scary for many people, as illiteracy is more widespread in the church than many people realize…. Read this in full at

HOW THE BIBLE CAME TO CANADA
In the spring of 1804, a young Mohawk chief named Teyoninhokarawen sailed for England to negotiate treaties with the English.

While in England, Teyoninhokarawen also known as Captain John Norton -noticed that many of those working for the abolition of slavery drew their inspiration from the Bible. He came to believe that the Bible’s message would benefit his people, too – if only it were available in Mohawk.

At the request of the Bible Society, he began translating the Gospel of John into Mohawk. It would become the first publication of the newly-formed Bible Society. Teyoninhokarawen, who spoke five European and ten native languages, completed the translation in just two months.

He set sail for Canada aboard HMS Mercury with five hundred copies of the Gospel translation. The ship finally arrived at a snowbound Quebec City, November 12, 1805, after fighting a raging storm for 11 weeks…. Read this in full at

BIBLE SOCIETY DISTRIBUTED 9 MILLION BIBLES DURING WW1
by Joy Aldred
Every member of the British Armed Forces in World War One was supplied with a Bible or a New Testament as a standard part of their kit.

There was also a huge demand for Bibles across Europe, as people struggled to come to terms with a terrible new reality.

So between August 1914 and August 1918 Bible Society distributed more than 9 million copies of Scripture in over 80 languages to members of the Armed Forces and prisoners of war on all sides.

It managed this despite immense challenges. There were supply shortages. The cost of paper had risen and it was rationed. There were submarine blockades and merchant ships were sunk…. Read this in full at

WORLD WAR I REMEMBERED AS ‘STAND FOR LIBERTY’ 100 YEARS LATER
Though Southern Baptists didn’t want America to enter World War I when it broke out, they came to see it as a necessary fight to preserve liberty and morality, historians have noted at the war’s 100th anniversary. One scholar added that America’s victory may have helped inspire the Cooperative Program.

“Prior to America’s entry into the war, there is a strong antiwar sentiment (among Southern Baptists) that ‘we don’t need to get involved,'” Bill Sumners, director of the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives, told Baptist Press. But when President Woodrow Wilson, “who was favored by Southerners and Southern Baptists,” recommended that America enter the war, Baptists “pretty well supported him. You find very little — though there’s some — dissent about entry into the war. For the most part Southern Baptists rally to join the conflict.”

In its final annual meeting before the war ended in late 1918, the Southern Baptist Convention adopted a report from its Committee on World Crisis that deemed military conflict the only way to stop Germany from suppressing democracy…. Read this in full at

WWI’S IMPACT ON CHRISTIANS
by Stephen Douglas Wilson
July 28th marked the centennial of the beginning of the First World War (1914-1918). As indicated by the name for the conflict, the war touched nearly everyone in the world at the time.

Perhaps as many as 16 million soldiers and civilians died in the conflict, and more than 50 million people died from the 1918 influenza pandemic spawned by abysmal wartime conditions. Postwar famines in Eastern Europe and Asia also stemmed from the conflict. Four empires — the Ottoman, German, Russian and Austro-Hungarian — were toppled and replaced by a collection of smaller states. The British government gave legal recognition to the small Jewish community in Palestine with the Balfour Declaration, clearing the way for the eventual establishment of modern Israel.

In addition, postwar instability spawned a series of smaller conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Armenian and Greek genocides began during the war. Finally, 20th century Fascism, Nazism, state Communism and Japanese militarism had roots in World War I and its immediate aftermath…. Read this in full at

A GOOD CHURCH SERVICE
As long as you notice, and have to count, the steps, you are not yet dancing but only learning to dance. A good shoe is a shoe you don’t notice. Good reading becomes possible when you need not consciously think about eyes, or light, or print, or spelling. The perfect church service would be one we are almost unaware of; our attention would have been on God.”
– C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer, New York: Harcourt Brace and World, 1964, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2002, p. 4

I’M A CHRISTIAN! (AND OTHER FALSE CLAIMS MADE BY “CHRISTIAN CULTS”)
by Clare De Graaf
A few months ago, I met with a great young man, bright and articulate, who introduced himself as a Christian. But, 10 minutes into the conversation, I found out he was a Mormon. So we talked about that. He insisted Mormons were Christians, so I asked him just one question, “Do you believe Jesus Christ has always been and is today the Son of God, a member of the trinity?

We believe Jesus is a great prophet and became God through his obedience, we revere his teachings in our church,” he answered. “I know that,” I said, “but one of the central tenants of historical orthodox Christianity is that Jesus is and always has been one with God the Father and Holy Spirit.  To not believe that, is to be outside of the Christian faith. That’s why we consider Mormonism a Christian cult. It embraces many Christian beliefs, but rejects Jesus as an eternal being. That’s a deal killer for Christians!”

He continued to insist he was a Christian, because I believe to do so adds legitimacy to Mormonism. So, lets examine some of the key issues that separate “Christian Cults,” from true, historical Christianity. I’ll end with two questions you can ask anyone in a cult who claims to be a Christian…. BILLY GRAHAM HAS SHAPED EVANGELICAL LIFE IN THE WORLD
by Steve Rabey
Billy Graham likely will be remembered as the world’s greatest evangelist, having preached to live audiences of nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and having persuaded millions to accept his offer of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Nearly a decade after his last major public appearance, the ailing 95-year-old remains Americans’ “most admired” religious figure of the last half-century, appearing on the annual Gallup list 57 times, nearly double anyone else.

Graham’s greatest legacy might be the evangelical movement he shaped and guided. He co-founded major institutions, including Christianity Today magazine and the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, a fundraising watchdog group that promotes ethical practices and counts dozens of Colorado Springs-based organizations among its members…. NEW COMMENTARY SERIES FOR MODERN BIBLE TEACHERS: AN INTERVIEW WITH MARK STRAUSS AND JOHN WALTON
Most pastors spend 10-18 hours a week preparing for their Sunday sermon. A new Bible commentary series is designed to assist in that effort by offering Bible reference and background material in concise six-page units.

Bible Gateway interviewed Dr. Mark Strauss and Dr. John Walton, the general editors of Teach the Text Commentary Series (website) (Baker Books, 2014).

For the average person in a worship service, explain what ‘biblical exegesis’ means in relation to the preacher’s sermon?

Dr. Strauss & Dr. Walton: “Biblical Exegesis” refers to the process of analyzing the text for the purposes of interpreting and understanding at every level. It includes language analysis (such as grammar and the meaning of words), literary analysis (how the passage is shaped literarily and used in the book), theological analysis (both in the context and in our theology today) and even extends to practical application. The exegesis of the text serves as the foundation for the sermon…. Read this in full at

ASSEMBLIES OF GOD TURNS 100 AND LOOKS TO A MULTIETHNIC FUTURE
by Adelle M. Banks
The Rev. Paul Agamiri made a vow when he was housed at a Kenyan refugee camp in the 1990s: If he ever made it to the United States, he would work with the white pastors in America.

A decade after he arrived in Fargo, N.D., the Sudanese man started All Nations Assembly of God in 2005 with fellow Sudanese and Liberian refugees. It now includes Africans from a dozen nations and three deacons – a Liberian, a Hutu, and a Tutsi. Though just a few white worshippers join the 250 each Sunday for standing-room-only worship, Agamiri wants them to feel included.

“Many of the white people, they’re afraid to come, thinking that they would not be accepted,” Agamiri said. “White or black or whatever color, we are all connected together. We are God’s children, so there’s no worry.” …. Read this in full at

NORTH CAROLINA RESTAURANT OFFERS A 15% DISCOUNT TO PRAY IN PUBLIC
A Winston-Salem restaurant is giving customers a 15 percent discount if they pray in public.

Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem gives the discount for anyone who takes the time to appreciate their food before digging in. Although the restaurant has been offering the special for four years, a recent Facebook post featuring a receipt with the discount has gone viral, highlighting the practice.

Jordan Smith was on a business trip when she got her discount. She told HLN that she and her colleagues “prayed over our meal and the waitress came over at the end of the meal and said, “Just so you know, we gave you a 15 percent discount for praying.” …. Read this in full at

GARDEN OF EDEN EXHIBIT TAKES ARTISTS BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
by Chris Herlinger
If the story of the Garden of Eden is such a common cultural reference point, what more can be said about it?

Plenty, at least judging by a new exhibit at the Museum of Biblical Art, which is affiliated with the American Bible Society.

The famed narrative of Eden in the Book of Genesis has been the subject of “New Yorker cartoon after New Yorker cartoon,” said guest curator Jennifer Scanlan, noting the enduring power of the Eden narrative.

Couples solely wearing fig leaves remain “instantly recognizable as Adam and Eve and fruit trees inhabited by snakes as the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil with the serpent,” she writes in the exhibit catalog…. Read this in full at

READ THE BIBLE FOR YOURSELF!
by Chris Juby
Bible Gateway has been republishing my @BibleSummary Tweets for seven months now. We’ve made it through the five books of Moses and we’ve just finished Joshua’s conquest of the Promised Land. Next come the strange, wonderful and sometimes disturbing stories of the Judges.

How are you finding the journey? My guess is that there have already been a few surprises if you’ve been following the whole way. That was certainly true for me as I summarized.

Even though I’d read the whole Bible before, I remember feeling very puzzled when the book of Exodus switched from the famous story of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt into detailed lists of specifications for the tabernacle about two thirds of the way through. And somehow I had previously managed to miss the fact that the whole of Deuteronomy is Moses’ farewell speech to the Israelites before he dies and they enter the Promised Land…. Read this in full at

BRAZIL’S ‘BILLIONAIRE BISHOP’ BUILDS $300M SOLOMON’S TEMPLE REPLICA
A 10,000-seat rendition of Solomon’s Temple was inaugurated last week in São Paulo, Brazil, owned by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God.

The large 11-story complex has a helicopter landing pad, allowing Universal Church founder and Brazil’s “billionaire bishop,” Edir Macedo, to drop in for sermons. It also features an oasis of olive trees similar to the garden of Gethsemane near Jerusalem and more than 30 towering columns.

“The Universal Church spared no expense,” Rogério Araújo told The New York Times. “We sought to build a colossus, something that would make people stop and gaze, and that’s what we delivered.” …. Read this in full at

ATHEIST GROUP THREATENS LEGAL ACTION OVER BIBLE DISPLAY AT NATIONAL GUARD PROCESSING STATION
A recent enlistee in the Missouri National Guard said he felt pressured into taking a camouflage Bible that was available in the waiting room of a military entrance processing station – and a humanist group to which he belongs has threatened a lawsuit.

The Appignani Humanist Legal Center, the legal arm of the American Humanist Association – motto: “Good without a god” – sent a letter Monday to the Missouri National Guard and to officials within the General Services Administration, which oversees the St. Louis building that houses the MEPS. It states that “the government is violating the First Amendment by assisting in the distribution of Gideon Bibles to military recruits,” and that the letter’s recipients should send a plan of action to rectify the situation to the AHLC’s lawyer within two weeks “to avoid legal action.” …. THE WORLD’S TOP CHURCH-DESTROYING COUNTRIES
Inside the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to rebuild two monasteries and a church torn down by Stalin about 85 years ago. But as Russia rebuilds churches with one hand, with the other it’s been knocking them down.

While a campaign in China to de-Christianize city skylines has drawn the most international attention this summer, Pew Research Center recently calculated the world’s 34 countries with the most government destruction of religious property (as of 2012). Three countries topped the list, with 100 or more incidents: China, Russia, and Tajikistan…. Read this in full at

THE EVANGELICAL PERSECUTION COMPLEX
by Alan Nobleaug
Persecution has an allure for many evangelicals. In the Bible, Christians are promised by Saint Paul that they will suffer for Christ, if they love Him (Second Timothy 3:12). But especially in contemporary America, it is not clear what shape that suffering will take. Narratives of political, cultural, and theological oppression are popular in evangelical communities, but these are sometimes fiction or deeply exaggerated non-fiction—and only rarely accurate. This is problematic: If evangelicals want to have a persuasive voice in a pluralist society, a voice that can defend Christians from serious persecution, then we must be able to discern accurately when we are truly victims of oppression—and when this victimization is only imagined.

There are some understandable reasons for this exaggerated sense of persecution. Globally, Christians face incredible discrimination. In North Korea and many Muslim-governed countries, Christians risk imprisonment and death for their faith. The Christian community in Mosul, Iraq, was exiled, and many Christians are still persecuted by the ISIS, a jihadist group. Christians with a global perspective on their faith rightly identify themselves as part of a persecuted people in the 21st century…. Read this in full at

FOUR-STAGE PROCESS OF PERSECUTION
by Paul Estabrooks
Jesus’ basic communication theory in Matthew 12 is that people speak and act from the overflow of what is in their heart. Jeremiah and others remind us that the heart can be exceedingly wicked. One of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s famous statements is “The line of good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.”

Christian persecution within a country or state rarely happens suddenly or in isolation. It is most often a process. Some years ago Rev. Dr. Johan Candelin, who headed the World Evangelical Alliance’s (WEA) Religious Liberties Commission recognized this and devised a three-stage process of what happens leading up to persecution becoming entrenched in any society. He labeled the three stages of downward spiral as disinformation, discrimination and persecution. Dr. Candelin later expanded it to a six-stage process with each of the three having a passive, then active, aspect…. Read this in full at

BOOKS: THE BESTSELLERS AMERICANS ARE (AND AREN’T) READING
Kids across the USA are tallying up the checkmarks beside the finished books on their reading list.

As summer winds down, they proudly collect prizes from local libraries and win school awards. For many communities, getting kids to pick up a book during the summer months has become a whole-neighborhood endeavor, with pizza places, burger joints and ice-cream parlors offering treats as incentives (in addition to parental cajoling—or nagging).

At some point along the journey to adulthood, there’s no more free ice cream. Ideally, reading becomes its own reward, an incentive in itself to inhabit another world or learn something new. So who among the grownups is reading…and who isn’t?

To find out, Barna Group presented U.S. adults ages 18 and older with a list of current bestsellers and new releases and asked which books they can check off their own reading list…. Read this in full at

7 SIGNS YOU’RE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE
by Jesse Carey
When the entire world is at your fingertips, the temptation to never let it out of your sight is understandable.

Life-altering online advancements like GPS location software, social media connections, Candy Crush and an unending supply of Fail GIFs are available to us whenever we want, wherever we want. It’s an amazing time to be alive when anyone can watch this “Thanks Obama” clip on an endless loop while they wait in line at Starbucks.

Recent research has confirmed that cell phone “addiction” is actually a real thing. Professionals have even devised methods of determining if you suffer from a psychological condition that warrants actual medical intervention (symptoms include: reduction of competing behaviors, engaging in the behavior despite risks and negative consequences, withdrawal, etc.). But even if you’re not neurologically dependent on playing Kim Kardashian’s iPhone game for a few moments while you’re pumping gas, there still may be ways to determine that you are spending too much time looking at your phone. Here’s a list to help…. Read this in full at

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

Refrain
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light.

Dear mother earth, who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
Let them His glory also show.

And all ye men of tender heart,
Forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye! Alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and on Him cast your care!

And thou most kind and gentle Death,
Waiting to hush our latest breath,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou leadest home the child of God,
And Christ our Lord the way hath trod.

And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

EARLY EKKLESIA FELLOWSHIPS VS. MODERN “CHURCH” GATHERINGS
Aired 8/8/2014 @10:00PM central
George Barna chronicled in his book “REVOLUTION” what he found after over twenty years of researching churches, faith, and the group we call “christians.” His findings left me with a thirst for finding the REAL heart of God; not the watered down messages delivered from the pulpits of today’s so-called “churches.”
We will look at some of the information from Mr. Barna’s book and do a comparison of what God expects vs. what the “church” is doing.
