THE DANIEL PRAYER: AN INTERVIEW WITH ANNE GRAHAM LOTZ
What is the secret to the revival of the church? To spiritual restoration? How can you renew your own relationship with God? How did the ancient prayer of Daniel move heaven and change a nation?

Bible Gateway interviewed Anne Graham Lotz, the National Day of Prayer Task Force chairman, about her book, The Daniel Prayer: Prayer That Moves Heaven and Changes Nations (Zondervan, 2016).

Q: Why is prayer such an important activity?

Anne Graham Lotz: Communication with God is vital to a vibrant relationship with him. We will never really know God in an intimate, personal relationship if we don’t talk to him. Half of our communication with God is listening to what he has to say through his Word, which is why reading our Bibles is so important. The other half of communication is talking to him, which is prayer. Prayer is also important because the Bible commands us to pray…. Read this in full at

‘O LORD LISTEN, FORGIVE, HEAR, ACT’ AMERICA PRAYS
by Diana Chandler

From 45,000 or more venues including public parks, courthouses, churches, community centers, government buildings and the like, concerted pleas went up to God for America on the 66th annual National Day of Prayer.

“O Lord, Listen! O Lord, Forgive! O Lord, Hear and Act!” was the organized cry drawn from Daniel 9:19 May 4, that birthed perhaps hundreds of thousands of individual prayers for various aspects of society, including governmental sectors and leaders, families, media, businesses and religion, according to event organizers. “For Your Great Name’s Sake,” also taken from Daniel’s prayer, is the national theme…. FINDING GOD’S FINGERPRINTS: SEEING THE MIRACULOUS
by Alan Dowd

“There are two ways to live,” a wise man once observed. “You can live as if nothing is a miracle; or you can live as if everything is a miracle.”

Importantly, the source of this insight is not someone generally associated with faith, but rather one of the giants of science: Albert Einstein. It seems Einstein was suggesting that this world and this life are full of miracles, and indeed that this world and this life are miracles — if only we have the eyes to see God’s fingerprints.

That’s the great challenge in this age of “man-made miracles” — micro-surgeries performed on unborn babies, wonder drugs that cure disease and erase pain, boundless harvests that feed billions — and man-made horrors — pills that can effortlessly erase unborn life, weapons that can kill by the tens of thousands, mass murderers masquerading as holy men…. MARRIED FOR ADVERSITY
by Gary Thomas
You’d be miserable indeed if you trained to become a fireman and resented it every time there was a fire. Not that you want there to be a fire, but putting out fires is what you’re trained to do. It’s what you signed up for. You don’t run from the fire-you move toward it.

In the same way, when we get married, we sign up to be there in times of adversity. If it is true that a brother is “born for adversity,” it is doubly true that a husband or wife is “married for adversity” for when I marry my wife, I become her closest friend in addition to being her brother in Christ. We’re thus signing up to be there during our spouses’ worst moments, most trying seasons, and even most irritating personal challenges.

What if we took Proverbs 17:17 (“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity”) seriously and thus considered ourselves “married for adversity?” Rather than resenting adversity, or feeling sorry for ourselves (instead of empathy for our spouse) that we have to deal with adversity, we would see adversity as a call to action, to closeness, to encouragement and support…. MAKING A CASE FOR HYPOCRISY

by Clare De Graaf

Last year, I was meeting with a young man – a brand new Christian. He and I had been studying the Bible for months and he’d begun attending church and experimenting with living out the Christian life. But everything was new to him. He’d begin most days conscientiously thinking about God and virtuous living. Then occasionally slip back into old habits and sin. At times he enthusiastically embraced this new life and other times he wasn’t all that excited. He felt like a phony and a failure. It also felt hypocritical trying to be obedient when his heart wasn’t always in it, or even scared to death about what his friends might think or say.

“I feel like a hypocrite, when I fail, or my heart isn’t really in it. That’s a sin isn’t it?”

“Not necessarily,” was my answer…. Read this in full at

WHY READ THE BIBLE?

by David Mathis

Sitting with his closest friends, with the shadow of his own death looming in the upper room, Jesus lifted up his voice to the Father and uttered some of the most profound words of his ministry: “This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

Life – to know and enjoy Jesus Christ.

This is the heartbeat of our Bible reading – to know and enjoy “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:8), before whom even our greatest loves are considered nothing. This is the highest task of Bible reading, not to internalize a dry list of dos and donts, nor to find instruction or wisdom for living, but to know and enjoy more of God…. Read this in full at

YEAH, BUT THE BIBLE IS JUST ANOTHER BOOK

by Brad Henderson

So you like Jesus. You admire his life, you appreciate his teachings, you might even want to follow his example. But he comes with some extra baggage that you just can’t get past.

First on the list: Christians. They’re hypocritical and fake. Then there’s the Bible-a book filled with bad history and even worse violence. And isn’t religion just an ignorant person’s substitute for science, anyway?

FOUR KEY MOMENTS IN BIBLE ENGAGEMENT

by Randy Petersen

As we try to help people engage with the Bible, we recognize a progression. People don’t just flip a switch and become instantly “Bible engaged.” They grow into it. And this personalization of the Word is a key moment early in the process, the first of four such moments we’ll consider here.

1. Realizing the Bible is for me.

It’s a book, and who reads books anymore? It’s an old book, and we live in the now. It’s an old religious book, and so it’s often relegated to holidays and funerals. In the modern age, people have lots of reasons not to expect much from the Bible. It’s that anthropology text you haven’t touched since college. It’s that classic novel that everyone respects but no one reads. Words, words, words.

Until the moment it slices into your life…. Read this in full at

IF IT DOESN’T STEM ITS DECLINE, MAINLINE PROTESTANTISM HAS JUST 23 EASTERS LEFT

by Ed Stetzer

Christians recently celebrated Easter, a Sunday where many churches are robust and full. But, if current trends continue, mainline Protestantism has about 23 Easters left.

The news of mainline Protestantism’s decline is hardly new. Yet the trend lines are showing a trajectory toward zero in both those who attend a mainline church regularly and those who identify with a mainline denomination 23 years from now.

While the sky isn’t falling, the floor is dropping out…. Read this in full at

WHY RELIGION IS MORE DURABLE THAN COMMONLY THOUGHT IN MODERN SOCIETY

by Tom Gjelten

Recent research suggests that religion is more durable than was previously thought. While church attendance has declined sharply in western Europe, secularization has been less evident in the United States. The number of Americans who list their church affiliation as “none” has certainly increased, but more than 70 percent still identify generally as Christian.

The new consensus of sociologists and demographers is that modernization and secularization are indeed related, but in complex ways.

A study released by the Pew Research Center on the relation in the United States between religiosity and educational attainment (one component of modernization, along with technological change and others) at first glance appears to support the secularization thesis: The more education people have, the less religious they are.

A closer look at the data, however, offers a more nuanced picture. While highly educated Jews tend to be less observant than less educated Jews, the relation between education and religiosity is weaker among those Americans with a strong Christian identity…. Read this in full at

THE 4 MOST COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE AFTER DEATH

by Randy Frazee

What will a day in the life on the new earth be like?

Essentially, it will be like a day here on the old earth, without the curse and with the very presence of God among us. That’s a pretty big difference, isn’t it?

First, there will be rest and sleep in heaven (Hebrews 4:1-4; Revelation 14:13). In many ways, this whole salvation experience is to enable us to enter into a life of rest with God. And for the most important point of all, there will be coffee in the morning! Can I get an amen?

There will also be meaningful work for everyone. In the garden before the fall, God partnered with Adam to manage the earth under his authority (Genesis 1:28). I believe this responsibility will continue on the new earth, but without the frustration caused by the curse, since it will have been lifted (Revelation 22:3). Some of us will need to be reassigned. I don’t see the need for law enforcement or armies, but there will be plenty of other things to do. There will be much room for creativity, inventing, and learning in our new digs…. FEAR NOT!

by Ray Pritchard

If we aren’t worried about mice, we certainly fear rejection by those we love. And we all think about our own death from time to time. When will it happen and under what circumstances? If we are wise, we also wonder, what then?

I’m not surprised that fear of failure comes at the top for many people. How frustrating to feel like you’ve wasted your short sojourn on planet earth. It’s a terrible thing to conclude that your life was a bust because it didn’t turn out the way you hoped it would.

Somewhere in all our thinking God has to figure into the equation. There must be a reason that the Bible tells us (in various ways and in various places) to “fear not” hundreds of times. Fear is such a basic human emotion that many of us constantly live in the grip of fear, worry and anxiety. God told us to “fear not” because he knew that we would all wrestle with fear sooner or later.

God says hundreds of times in hundreds of ways “Fear not.”

What do you do when your fears seem to be winning the day? What if you pray and God still hasn’t come through for you? If you are like most people, you begin to lose hope, and you wonder why you bothered to pray in the first place. Deep in the soil of your heart, little seeds of doubt take root, growing up into a harvest of frustration and anger…. Read this in full at

THE BIBLE ANSWER MAN” TURNS EAST: AN UNLIKELY CONVERSION

by Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

It seems somewhat ironic that in the year that we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, a leading Protestant would reject the central tenet of the Reformation, Sola Scriptura, and join the Eastern Orthodox Church. Hank Hanegraaff, known to millions through his radio program, The Bible Answer Man, converted to Eastern Orthodoxy on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I cannot say that I know Hank personally, though I have met him casually many times and appeared on his radio show perhaps 20 years ago. At that time I appreciated his straightforward answers to Bible questions that were called in from all parts of the country. Throughout the years he has been of great benefit to the body of Christ by exposing the false doctrines of the cults, in his defense of biblical history, and in his apologetic for Christianity over against other religions…. THE ‘MORAL GUIDEBOOK’ APPROACH TO SCRIPTURE ISN’T WORKING

by Jake Raabe

What is the Bible? It seems even Evangelicals aren’t entirely sure.

The great 20th century theologian Karl Barth wrote: “The question, ‘What is in the Bible?’ has a mortifying way of turning into the opposing question: ‘Well, what do you want?’” He’s right. We tend to find in Scripture what we want to find in it. If we’re hoping for a rulebook, we can find it. If we believe it’s a nasty, bigoted book, we will find plenty to back that up, as well.

What we presuppose about the Bible is what we find in it. What we find in it is what we read in it. What we read in it, we believe about it.

So why is the idea of the Bible as a “good source of morals” more comfortable than a “historical account” to so many? First, there’s the immediate problem of defining what “historical account” means. For a book replete with history, poetry, parables, short stories and so on, this phrase is not particularly clear. Some of those who chose not to call the Bible a “historical account” may have done so because of the baggage associated with the “Battles for the Bible” of the last 30 years…. Read this in full at

61 NEW SCRIPTURE TRANSLATIONS COMPLETED LAST YEAR

In 2016, Bible Societies assisted in the completion of translations in 61 languages spoken by over 428 million people. 2016 was ‘a first’ for no fewer than 30 languages, spoken by over 95 million people. 17 communities now have their very first Bible, 6 have a New Testament and 7 communities have their first, or additional, portions of Scripture.

Languages are constantly developing so Bible Societies are also committed to revising existing translations and providing new translations, when requested, to help as many people as possible engage with the message of the Bible today. In 2016, this resulted in a further 28 new translations and revisions plus 3 study editions with the potential to reach over 333 million people…. Read this in full at

UNPRECEDENTED UNITY AMONG BIBLE TRANSLATORS TRANSFORMS GIVING

This fall, ten Bible translation agencies — from Wycliffe Bible Translators to Pioneer Bible Translators to the United Bible Societies — will invite givers to visit a single website to see how Bible translation is progressing around the world and to join in this effort by making their contributions. Rather than competing against one another for website visitors, the agencies will allow the collaborative site to connect visitors to the initiatives and organizations that best fit their interests.

That sort of others-centered cooperation is unprecedented in the Bible translation sector, said Dal Anderson, former chief operating officer of Seed Company and Every Tribe Every Nation. As of late 2016, this network of ten heavyweight Bible translation agencies and several resource partners was involved in 90 percent of the translation work done globally. “Those of us working in the Bible translation world know how big of a miracle this is.” …. I DON’T TAKE THE BIBLE LITERALLY, AND NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE

by Glenn T. Stanton

A recent report from Pew tells us that only 39 percent of Christians take the Bible literally. This is very bad news for believers’ fidelity to Scripture, but not for the reason you might think. It’s also a poor reflection on the good folks at Pew.

Why? It’s quite simple: Literally no one takes the Bible literally. NO ONE. But otherwise intelligent pollsters and journalists continue to ask the question as a gauge for who really takes the Bible seriously – or too seriously. And Christians continue to play along…. Read this in full at

THE BIBLE: THE BOOK THAT MADE AMERICA

by Daniel Dreisbach

When asked to identify the “founding fathers,” Americans typically name a few prominent political leaders and military heroes—figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. A more difficult question is: Who are America’s intellectual founding fathers? That is, whose ideas informed the American founding principles in republican self-government and liberty under law?

The standard history books report that the American founders in the last third of the 18th century drew on diverse intellectual sources, most prominently British constitutionalism, classical and civic republicanism, and Enlightenment liberalism. One could fill the shelves of a substantial library with all the books written on how John Locke and Baron de Montesquieu, the authors of the influential “Two Treatises of Government” and “The Spirit of the Laws,” respectively, “founded” America…. TOP TEN BIBLE VERSES IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND

by Beth Allison Barr

I have three warnings to give. First, I am giving you a sneak preview of some of my current research. So this is a work in progress; you can cite me next year. Second, assessing “top” medieval bible verses is a lot more complicated than it is today. Bible Gateway can count verses from its search engine to see which are looked for the most. I can’t do that. What I did was count how many times verses appeared in late medieval English sermons (mostly 1350-1500). Usually I am very free with explaining my methodology, but I am going to be more cagey today. Hopefully you trust me by now. I will give you my sources and methodology after I publish. So stay tuned! Third, medieval sermons focus more on passages than single verses. Verse divisions didn’t exist yet and larger chunks of scripture were referenced instead (so, for example, as Luke says in chapter 10….). For the sake of simplicity, however, I am going to pretend like verse divisions existed in our modern form and give you the scripture references as would recognize them today (just remember this is anachronistic).

Based on my survey of late medieval sermons, these are the top ten bible passages for Christianity in late medieval England. Here is the countdown, David Letterman style: …. Read this in full at

TELL YOUR DAUGHTER: FOCUS ON THE FAMILY REVIVES BRIO, A CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE FOR TEENAGE GIRLS

Teenage girls who dislike the frank sexuality of Cosmopolitan and the left-leaning politics of Teen Vogue but still want a magazine to give them tips on fashion and hairstyles (not to mention advice on abstinence) are in luck. This month Focus on the Family has relaunched Brio, a glossy teen magazine shut down in 2009.

The organization’s conservative Christian ethos animates Brio, which its publisher, Bob DeMoss, said has so far attracted over 56,000 subscribers through ads sent directly to Focus supporters. Its goal is to address the topics found in mainstream teen magazines from “a biblical worldview,” Mr. DeMoss said…. Read this in full at

RAISE A JUICE BOX TO THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT

by Jennifer L. Woodruff Tait

In 1869, a 43-year-old Methodist dentist on his third career helped Methodists change American Protestantism forever. You’ve experienced the results of his change every time you take a drink of Welch’s grape juice. But you wouldn’t be drinking that juice today if it wasn’t for Thomas Bramwell Welch’s desire to make non-alcoholic Communion wine.

T. B. Welch hailed from Glastonbury, England, the place celebrated in British folklore as the gravesite of the legendary King Arthur and his ill-fated queen Guinevere. Born there on December 31, 1825, he came to the United States with his family as a six-year old boy. The Welches settled in upstate New York, where T. B. Welch joined first the Methodist Episcopal Church and then — in anger that these mainstream Methodists permitted slaveholding — their abolitionist offshoot, the Wesleyan Methodists. He began preaching in Wesleyan Methodist churches at age 19, but his vocal chords were no match for his religious fervor, and he was out of the ministry at age 21…. Read this in full at

THE SECRET TO HONESTY REVEALED: IT FEELS BETTER

Why are most people honest? Now, using a complex array of MRI machines and electrocution devices, scientists claim to have found the answer.

THIS WEEK’S HYMN: ALL THE SACRIFICE IS ENDED

Words: Samuel J. Stone, 1866

Music: Henry T. Smart, 1867

All the sacrifice is ended,

Breathed His body’s latest breath,

And His human Soul hath wended

Where the weary rest beneath;

Christ as Man hath comprehended

All the human law of death!

Yet not there His Soul remaineth

Nor His body in the tomb:

Lo! what sudden glory gaineth

Quick dominion o’er the gloom!

Yea, o’er death and hell He reigneth

Bursting back the gates of doom!

Manifold the attestation

Brethren tell the marvel o’er,

And the soldiers from their station,

And the angels at the door,

And His own Word’s revelation,

“Lo! I live for evermore.”

Hail, thou morn of resurrection,

Primal holy Easter Day!

Now the hours of deep dejection

’Neath the night-clouds’ dark array,

Foes’ reviling, friends’ defection,

In thy glory pass away!

Now He lives and reigns for ever!

That we too may enter in

Where eternal life shall never

Taste of sorrow or of sin,

Where from Him no death shall sever

Those He vanquished death to win.

Savior! in our night of weeping

Tell us of the joyful morn,

Guard our souls, their vigil keeping

In the hours of hate and scorn

Raise us falling, wake us sleeping,

Till our Easter Day be born.
