Though the fig tree doesn’t bloom, and there’s no produce on the vine; though the olive crop withers, and the fields don’t provide food; though the sheep are cut off from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls; I will rejoice in the LORD. I will rejoice in the God of my deliverance.

SUPREME COURT DECLINES TO REVIEW CASE OF MARINE COURT-MARTIALED OVER BIBLE VERSE
The Supreme Court of the United States declined to review First Liberty Institute’s appeal in the case of Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling, a US Marine convicted at court-martial for refusing an order to remove an inspirational Bible verse from her workstation.

“Because the Supreme Court did not decide to review the case, the travesty below by the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces will now stand,” said Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO & Chief Counsel for First Liberty. “The military court’s outrageous decision means federal judges and military officials can strip our service members of their constitutional rights just because they don’t think someone’s religious beliefs are important enough to be protected. Our service members deserve better.” …. Read this in full at

RECLAIMING THE LOST ART OF BIBLICAL MEDITATION: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT J. MORGAN
Do you long to deepen your intimacy with God? How can contemplating, visualizing, and personalizing the Bible help you find a sense of soul-steadying peace?

Bible Gateway interviewed Robert J. Morgan about his book, Reclaiming the Lost Art of Biblical Meditation: Find True Peace in Jesus (Thomas Nelson, 2017).

Q: What is the act of meditating and what does the Bible say about its importance?

Robert J. Morgan: Biblical meditation is the habit of treasuring up God’s words and pondering them in our hearts. It’s grounded in daily Bible study; but when we leave our time of Bible reading, it’s important to take Scripture with us so we can mentally mull over it all day long. Meditation is pondering, picturing, and practicing Scripture. If I’m meditating on the Love Chapter of the Bible, for example, I quote verses from 1 Corinthians 13 to myself all day. If I need guidance, I preach Proverbs 3:5-6 to myself day and night. If I’m anxious, I keep rehearsing Philippians 4:4-6. Meditation is the portable habit of training the mind to think about Scripture passages in every spare moment, in times of both tension and relaxation…. Read this in full at

MEN WE ARE THIRD
by Gary Thomas
In order to have a God-honoring marriage, I have to realize that I come in third in my wife’s allegiance. Lisa is God’s daughter first, God’s servant second, and my wife third. The best marriages will be built on husbands keeping these priorities in mind.

Before Lisa is anything else, she is God’s daughter (1 John 3:1). Since there is no marriage in heaven (Matthew 22:30), her relationship as God’s daughter is her primary, eternal relationship. Because of this, I want her to receive affirmation, encouragement, and spiritual nourishment from her heavenly Father on a daily basis, which means my role as her husband is to make sure she gets the time and space she needs to connect with God.

Husbands, if your wife has young children, one of your primary concerns should be making sure she has windows every day to live her life as God’s daughter. You may not be able to give her an hour quiet-time, but there should be moments every day when she can at least get away to read a devotional and pray or worship, however she best connects with God. And make sure she has regular times of corporate connection with other believers—attending church, and preferably a small group, or Bible Study. Before she is your wife, she is God’s daughter. She needs the joy, strength, resolve, and purpose that comes from regularly connecting with God. If you keep that relationship primary, you’ll actually benefit as a husband. Whatever you need to do with helping to keep up the house and watch the kids so that she can do this, you should do…. Read this in full at

FRANK DEFORD: A ‘ROARING LAMB’ WHO WAS AMONG THE BEST OF THE BEST IN JOURNALISM – PERIOD
by Terry Mattingly
have been trying, for some time now, to decide what to write about the recent death of the legendary Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated, National Public Radio, Newsweek, etc.

I bring no special journalistic insights into what made his reporting and writing so special. In this case, the word “great” is simply inadequate.

In fact, much of the mainstream coverage of his passing focused on a much loftier question: Where should Deford be listed among the greatest sportswriters of all time? But why limit this discussion to sportswriting? Many would argue that we need to open that discussion up to his legacy in long-form, American magazine journalism – period…. Read this in full at

THE LIE WE’D ALL LIKE TO BELIEVE
by Clare De Graaf
I’m sure someone else is (or will) help them.

There it is. The lie we’d all like to believe.

A few weeks back, I was with two men I had just met. They mentioned they had a third pastor friend who had a fair amount of debt from his seminary education. Both men shared real concern for the burden this placed on the young pastor and his family.

Near the end of the conversation, one of the men made the statement I’ve often heard and have probably said myself, “well, I’m sure someone else is helping them.” Why is it that idea comes so easily to us? Here’s what I think.

It allows us to “pass by” the problem, like the first two religious leaders who passed the victim in the story of the Good Samaritan. That thought allows us to assuage our guilt about not wanting to get involved, by believing, for sure someone else will help them out. “God will provide.” (Just not me!)…. Read this in full at

8 WAYS TO MEASURE YOUR LOVE FOR THE BIBLE
by Tim Challies
Christians are people of the Word, men and women who live their lives according to its every precept. The Bible is the revelation of God to display his character and to show what it means to live in conformity to him. It is an inestimable privilege to have access to the mind and will of God. Yet while many people pay homage to the Bible, few love it. How can you know if your love for the Bible goes beyond a mere passing fancy? Here are a few ways to measure whether or not you truly love the Word.

You show your love for the Word by reading it diligently. Your heart is a library meant to hold the Word of God. It is a map that charts the way to heaven and deserves to be pored over every day. It alone has the double power to teach and judge you. The person who will not be taught by the Word shall in the end by judged by the Word…. Read this in full at

LIVING HISTORY: EXPLORE THE CULTURE AND HISTORY BEHIND FAMOUS BIBLE STORIES IN FREE EMAIL DEVOTIONAL
You’ve heard many Bible stories hundreds of times. But as those stories have become more and more familiar, what background details might you be missing?

Christians believe that reading and understanding the Bible requires no special knowledge of history. But while that’s true, it’s also true that many familiar Bible stories take on fresh meaning when we understand the cultural context in which they occurred…. Read this in full at

8 WAYS TO SHAPE YOUR FAMILY SPIRITUALLY
by Garrett Kell
A parent’s most basic task is to help their children learn how to live in God’s world. This isn’t a once in a while task, but an opportunity that is available nearly every moment.

One of our elders recently shared how he an his wife help their seven children develop spiritually. What follows are my reflections on the principles he shared with us.

1. Family Devotions
Few habits are more important in a home than daily Bible reading. There is no magic formula to the reading, just open the Bible and read it together. Read through chapter by chapter and discuss what you learn about God, about people, and how you should respond. Then ask God to help you. How much you read is less important than the consistency of your reading. A family that feasts on daily manna together is a family that will grow in their love for the Giver of the manna…. A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF BIBLICAL JOY
3 Hebrew Word Studies on Joy
Sameach: The joy the people felt was more than just a spontaneous subjective emotion – it was rooted very concretely in all “that the LORD had done for David, Solomon, and for His people Israel.” Indeed, the Feast of Tabernacles was intended as a time of rejoicing for all the ways the Lord had blessed His people (Deut. 16:15). The people were filled with “great joy” at Solomon’s coronation (1 Kin. 1:40). Haman’s joy at his plot to kill Mordecai (Esth. 5:9, 14) backfired when he was executed instead, “and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad” (Esth. 8:15). But more often, joy is connected directly to God: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad.” (Ps. 126:3)…. Read this in full at

HOW STEPH CURRY CARRIES THE BIBLE WITH HIM ON AND OFF THE COURT
To say that LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers got outplayed by the Warriors in game 1 of the 2017 NBA finals would be a serious understatement. One thing we know is certain, Golden State is tough to beat when Stephen Curry finds his groove.

PRAYERWALKING REQUESTED BY KY. GOV. TO CURB CRIME
by Myriah Snyder
Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin called faith community leaders from across the state to a meeting June 1 to share ideas for how they can help curb crime issues that plague various communities.

Bevin’s proposal, in short, is to prayerwalk and engage with the communities that need it the most.

“The lieutenant governor and myself laid out a very simple request to people: It is harnessing people of faith to pray for the community, engage with the community by physically walking blocks in that community, praying for the community …,” Bevin said in a news conference after the meeting in West Louisville…. ETIQUETTE FOR INEXPERIENCED CATS
1. If you have to throw up, get into a chair quickly. If you cannot manage this in time, get to an Oriental rug. Shag is good.

2. Determine quickly which guest hates cats. Sit on that lap during the evening. He won’t dare push you off and will even call you “nice kitty.” If you can arrange to have cat food on your breath, so much the better.

3. For sitting on laps or rubbing against trouser legs, select colors that contrast your own.

4. Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.

5. For guests that say “I love kitties,” be ready with aloof disdain, claws applied to stockings, or a quick nip on the ankles.

6. Do not allow closed doors in any room. To get one open, stand on hind legs and hammer doorknob with forepaws. Once the door is opened for you, it is not necessary to use it. You can change your mind. When you have ordered an outside door opened, stand half in and half out and think about several things. This is important during very cold weather or mosquito season.

7. If one person is busy and the other is idle, sit with the busy one. For book readers, get in close under the chin, unless you can lie across the book itself.

8. For ladies knitting, curl quietly into lap and pretend to doze. Then reach out and slap knitting needles sharply. This is what she calls a dropped stitch. She will try to distract you. Ignore it.

9. For people doing homework, sit on the paper being worked on. After being removed the second time, push anything movable off the table (pens, pencils, stamps) one at a time.

10. Get enough sleep during the day.

THE QUR’AN IN CONTEXT: AN INTERVIEW WITH MARK ROBERT ANDERSON
How does the Qur’an compare to the Bible? What figures and themes can be found in both? What is the theology, anthropology, soteriology, and portrayal of Jesus throughout the Qur’an?

In the following question-and-answer, Mark Robert Anderson talks about his book, The Qur’an in Context: A Christian Exploration (IVP Academic, 2016).

Q: How does the portrayal of Jesus in the Bible compare to how he’s portrayed in the Qur’an?

Mark Robert Anderson: The Qur’an clearly honors Jesus by presenting him as a virgin-born, sinless prophet and miracle worker (in the same sense that the Bible presents Moses and Elijah as miracle workers). But even as the Qur’an honors Jesus, it sidelines him, making him very secondary to Muhammad, whom it calls the Seal of the Prophets. It also reverses Jesus’ ethical teachings on a number of key points and deemphasizes his death and resurrection to such a degree that most Muslims believe the Qur’an denies their historicity…. MICHIGAN SCHOOL DISTRICT TO AGAIN ALLOW STUDENT ATTENDANCE OF OFF-SITE VOLUNTARY BIBLE CLASS AFTER REVIEW OF COMPLAINT

PURDUE RESEARCHER VERIFIES EXISTENCE OF 53 PEOPLE IN THE HEBREW BIBLE
Lawrence Mykytiuk cannot document that everything in the Bible took place as written. But the Purdue professor says he can prove many of the people written about did, in fact, exist.

“While some would put their hand on the Bible and really mean it when they take an oath, a few revisionist academics would throw it out and say, ‘That’s creative writing.’ I was looking for concrete, objective evidence outside of the Bible that would help build the case,” Mykytiuk, an associate professor of library science, said.

Mykytiuk (pronounced MICK-ee-took) has added three names to the previously published 50 Old Testament individuals in the Bible, beginning with King David, all of whom he says he has verified through his research. The three new people are Tattenai (also translated as Tatnai), a Persian governor during the time of Ezra (after the Babylonian exile); and two high officials of Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II: Nergal-sharezer, called the “samgar” official, and Nebuzaradan, “the chief of the guards.” …. CHATTANOOGA, TN TOPS LIST OF CITIES WITH HIGH CHURCH ATTENDANCE
Barna’s latest report ranks the nation’s largest cities according to three different metrics related to church attendance: churched (very active), unchurched and dechurched. Those classified as churched (very active) have attended a church service in the past seven days, not including a special event such as a wedding or a funeral. Those classified as unchurched have not attended a church service in the past six months, not including a special event such as a wedding or a funeral. And finally, those classified as dechurched were formerly either very, somewhat or minimally active churchgoers, but have not attended a church service in the past six months, excluding a special event such as a wedding or a funeral.

Based on Barna’s most recent data, almost four in 10 (38%) Americans are active churchgoers, slightly more (43%) are unchurched, and around one-third (34%) are dechurched. But as you’ll see, there are great variations among American cities. We’ve ranked the top 20 according to the three key metrics:…. Read this in full at

THE GREEK WORD THAT CAN’T BE TRANSLATED
by Stav Dimitropoulos
The exact meaning of philotimo is hotly debated, given that the word belongs to the pantheon of Greek lexical items that defy easy explanation. ‘Love of honor’, its official translation, is a utilitarian yet insufficient attempt to convey the constellation of virtues squeezed into the word’s four syllables. When I asked various Greeks about their own perception of philotimo, I received very different responses.

“Doing the right thing,” Pinelopi Kalafati, a doctor, told me. “Loving and honoring God and your society,” said priest Nikolas Papanikolaou. “Striving for perfection,” answered actor Kostis Thomopoulos. “Stepping out from your comfort zone to help someone in need,” suggested Tatiana Papadopoulou, a volunteer in Malakasa detention camp for refugees…. “Someone has said that all living is just learning the meaning of words. That does not mean the long ten syllable words we have to look up in the dictionary. The really great words to master are short ones: work, love, hope, joy, pain, home, child, life, death.”

VERSE TO PONDER
I ask that Christ will live in your hearts through faith. As a result of having strong roots in love, I ask that you’ll have the power to grasp love’s width and length, height and depth, together with all believers. I ask that you’ll know the love of Christ that is beyond knowledge so that you will be filled entirely with the fullness of God.

THIS WEEK’S HYMN: COME, DEAREST LORD
Words: Isaac Watts, 1709
Music: Henry K. Oliver, 1832

Come, dearest Lord, descend and dwell
By faith and love in every breast;
Then shall we know, and taste, and feel
The joys that cannot be expressed.

Come, fill our hearts with inward strength,
Make our enlargèd souls possess,
And learn the height, and breadth, and length
Of Thine unmeasurable grace.

Now to the God Whose power can do
More than our thoughts or wishes know,
Be everlasting honors done
By all the church, through Christ His Son.

ON PRAYER
“Dear Lord, it seems that you are so madly in love with your creatures that you could not live without us. So you created us; and then, when we turned away from you, you redeemed us. Yet you are God, and so have no need of us. Your greatness is made no greater by our creation; your power is made no stronger by our redemption. You have no duty to care for us, no debt to re-pay us. It is love, and love alone, which moves you.”
