DID YOU KNOW THE SAYING “GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES” ISN’T IN THE BIBLE?
by Jeremy Bouma
While discussing God’s relationship to people and their circumstances, a friend quoted a phrase many people assume is in the Bible:
“God helps those who help themselves.”

He isn’t alone: one in 8 Americans believe the Bible not only teaches this, but that it says this, too.

And yet if you went searching for it in the book of Proverbs or in the sayings of Jesus, you’d be out of luck—it’s nowhere in the Bible. In fact, the Bible says and teaches the exact opposite!

So if it’s not in the Bible, where’d it come from? And what does the Bible say instead? …. Read this in full at

STEPH CURRY, KEVIN DURANT DOMINATE NBA FINALS, BUT SAY GOD GETS THE GLORY
The Golden State Warriors have done it again! They are NBA champions for the second time in three seasons. They beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in game five of the finals, winning the series four to one. Three-point jump shots, points in the paint, and a tight defense gave them the lead going into the fourth quarter.

Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant were unstoppable carrying the team to their nine-point victory. Both are outspoken Christians and say they recognize that their talent comes from God…. Read this in full at

BEING THE STRONG FATHER YOUR CHILDREN NEED: AN INTERVIEW WITH MEG MEEKER, MD
Does society undervalue fatherhood? When men are defined primarily by their professional accomplishments, where does that leave their approach to parenting? How can being a strong, active dad be a man’s greatest triumph?

Bible Gateway interviewed Meg Meeker, MD about her book, Hero: Being the Strong Father Your Children Need (Regnery Faith, 2017).

Q: How does the Bible portray God as a role model for fathers?

Meg Meeker, MD: God is serious about fathers and the influence they have on their children, the culture and the survival of humanity. However, we’re living in a culture that doesn’t like fathers very much. Media portrays them as idiots who hog TV remotes, need correction by snarky 11-year-olds, and who serve as fodder for comedians. In many ways, God knew that today was coming. So we, who love him, need to be about the business of building up every father, everywhere…. Read this in full at

‘LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU’
by Michael Brown
Although I’ve read the words many times before and could easily quote them from memory, I was staggered the last time I read them. How could we miss the mark so dramatically? How could something so important to our Lord be so unimportant to us?

If you consider yourself to be a follower of Jesus, please read this carefully. In fact, stop for a moment and breathe a prayer as you read. Perhaps God will speak to you through the words that follow.

On the night that Jesus was betrayed, he said to his disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).

What devastating, shattering words. The world will know that we are devoted followers of Jesus by the love we have for each other. And it is to be a love that emulates the love that Jesus had for us. How miserably have we failed here!

We are better known for sniping at each other, for gossiping about each other, for speaking harsh words and posting ugly comments and engaging in fleshly, immature behavior that is anything but loving. How can the world possibly recognize us as disciples of Jesus if we are not marked by a genuine, deep, Christ-like love? How can it recognize us as members of his own family if we do not bear that family likeness? …. Read this in full at

MOST OF US HAVE THE REPUTATION WE DESERVE
by Clare De Graaf
I once had a conversation with a very successful man, who had a horrible reputation in the business community. He also claimed to be a Christian.

He went to his pastor to ask why he was never nominated to be a deacon. After all, he was good with money. His pastor had the courage to tell him that the reason he hadn’t been nominated was his reputation. He was incredulous!

So, he came to see me, indignant that he was being slandered by people in his church. “Do you think I have a reputation as a tough businessman?” he asked. And I told him the truth.

“I don’t deserve that reputation,” he said. To which I said, “Most of us have the reputation we deserve.” “A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume. And the day you die is better than the day you are born.” Ecclesiastes 7:1…. Read this in full at

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN BIBLE PROPHECY FRIGHTENS ME?
by Ron Rhodes
Does Bible prophecy ever frighten you? If it does, a great antidote is the recognition that Bible prophecy consistently points us to the greatness of God. Take some time to consider these truths:

God is eternal. The God of prophecy has always existed. He is the eternal King (1 Timothy 1:17), who alone is immortal (6:16). He is “the Alpha and the Omega” (Revelation 1:8) and “the First and the Last” (Isaiah 44:6). He exists “from beginning to end” (Psalm 90:2). A great comfort related to God’s eternal nature is the absolute confidence that God will never cease to exist. He will always be there for us. Human leaders come and go. Countries come and go. But God is eternal and is always there! The prophetic future is in His eternal hands…. Read this in full at

PORTLAND-AUBURN, MAINE: THE MOST POST-CHRISTIAN CITY IN THE TOP 100 MEDIA MARKETS IN AMERICA
Nearly four in 10 Americans are active churchgoers, Barna Group reports, while 43% are unchurched and and 34% describe themselves as dechurched.

“It may come as no surprise that the influence of Christianity in the United States is waning,” Barna said in a summary of the research posted online. “Rates of church attendance, religious affiliation, belief in God, prayer and Bible-reading have all been dropping for decades.”

Those trends inspired Barna to develop a metric to measure the post-Christian status of American cities.

To achieve that designation, respondents had to meet nine out of 16 criteria. These included identifying as agnostic or atheist, not making a commitment to Jesus Christ, not attending church for six months, and believing that Jesus sinned…. Read this in full at

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT READING THE BIBLE
by Matthew S. Harmon
1. The Bible is both a divine and a human book.
Every word of the Bible is inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16). He spoke through the various human authors, using their unique personalities and writing styles to communicate exactly what he wanted to say (2 Pet. 1:20–21).

2. The Bible is a story.
The Bible is not simply a collection of religious sayings or an anthology of various people’s religious experiences. The Bible tells us the true story of the world, the way things truly are and should be. Understanding the basic plot of the Bible that runs from Genesis to Revelation helps us better understand every passage in between…. Read this in full at

A WAY THAT LEADS TO DEATH
by Paul Tripp
One of the biggest spiritual dangers that Christians experience on this side of eternity is death masquerading as life.

The enemy will promise life, but what it actually results in is death. It was the lie that tricked Adam and Eve, and frustratingly, our sinful hearts continue to fall for the false promises.

That’s why we need to remind ourselves daily of the warning in Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

Here are four everyday temptations that appear life-giving but will ruin us…. Read this in full at

THE DANIEL CODE: AN INTERVIEW WITH O. S. HAWKINS
Are you struggling to live out your faith in a rapidly changing culture that seems to have lost its way? The ancient book of Daniel speaks of how he survived and thrived in a pagan, permissive, and perverted society.
[Sign up for The Daniel Code free email devotional]

Bible Gateway interviewed O. S. Hawkins about his book, The Daniel Code: Living Out Truth in a Culture That Is Losing Its Way (Thomas Nelson, 2017).

Q: How does the book of Daniel, written more than 2600 years ago, serve as a guide for today?

O. S. Hawkins: Our brightest young minds are in the process of being re-educated along the lines of principles that are foreign to those of all our founding fathers. Today we live in a world where too many believe there’s no absolute truth. We’re seeing the removal of the distinctions between the roles of male and female in society, the rise of gay marriage. We see bold advocacy of abortion rights, euthanasia, and the redistribution of wealth in America. This didn’t happen in the last few years. It’s been decades in the making. In many ways we’ve become the Babylon of the modern era…. Read this in full at

SORRY, OLD TESTAMENT: MOST THEOLOGIANS DON’T USE YOU
by Caleb Lindgren
Do you ever feel that pastors are always preaching on the same Bible verses? Or that theologians always seem to reference the Gospels and Paul, but rarely the Old Testament?

You’re likely right, according to a new study of the 100 Bible verses cited most frequently in systematic theology books. Faithlife, the organization behind Logos Bible Software, examined more than 830,000 verses across more than 300 works to produce the list.

Unsurprisingly, the New Testament gets used a lot more than the Old Testament, with references to Paul’s letters making especially frequent appearances. The Gospel of John, the Gospel of Matthew, and the Book of Hebrews are also frequently cited.

By contrast, only 9 of the top 100 most-cited Bible passages in systematic theology come from the Old Testament—with Genesis accounting for 8 of them. (Isaiah is the 9th)…. Read this in full at

RULES FOR A DIET
1. If you eat something and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories.

2. If you drink diet soda with candy bars, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled out by the diet soda.

3. When you eat with someone else, calories don’t count as long as you don’t eat more than they do.

4. Food used for medicinal purposes never counts, such as hot chocolate, toast, and Sara Lee cheesecake.

5. If you fatten up the people around you, then you look thinner.

6. Movie-related foods do not have additional calories because they are part of the entire entertainment package and are not part of one’s personal intake. (Examples are Milk Duds, buttered popcorn, Junior Mints, Red Hots and Tootsie Rolls.)

7. Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking cookies causes caloric leakage.

8. Things licked off knives and spoons have no calories if you are in the process of preparing something. (Examples are peanut butter on a knife while making a sandwich or ice cream on a spoon while making a sundae.)

9. Foods that have the same color have the same number of calories. For instance, spinach and pistachio ice cream, cauliflower and whipped cream.

NOTE: Chocolate is a universal substitute and may be used in place of any other food.

EN-GEDI SCROLLS AND THE ACCURACY OF THE BIBLE
by Kyle Butt
Any honest person who has studied the process of how ancient books have come down to us in modern times knows this remarkable fact: the Bible is the most accurately transmitted book in the history of the world. Skeptics and those of other religions (such as Islam) often attempt to cast doubt on the biblical text by claiming that the words that were in the originals have been lost over thousands of years of copying. This accusation is patently false. The accurate and meticulous transmission of the 66 books we call the Bible is nothing short of divine. To document this truth would take entire volumes of thousands of pages each, which has been done, but we have no room to repeat it here. One good summary article of that vast research is the AP article “3 Good Reasons to Believe the Bible Has Not Been Corrupted.” …. Read this in full at

THE BIBLE GIVEN TO PRESIDENT JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
The Bible is hands down the most read and sold book in history. The very idea of printed books in the West starts with the Bible (much obliged, Gutenberg). No matter what your spiritual or religious affiliations may be, you’ve probably come across a Bible if you’ve ever stayed in a hotel in the US and opened your night stand. And even if you’ve never opened one, you’ve likely read allusions and quotes from its texts, as literature abounds with biblical references (see Dostoevsky, Melville, Dante, Faulkner etc.). BEWARE THE SIREN CALL OF PERFECT PARENTING
by Jim Daly
In his book Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” With all due respect to Tolstoy, I doubt that’s true. While every family is indeed unique, the unhappy families that I’ve seen and even been a part of seem to “break” in only a handful of ways.

Dr. Tim Elmore, founder of the Growing Leaders ministry and a frequent guest on the Focus on the Family daily program, says our mistakes fall into one of two areas: abundance or abandonment. That seems right to me. As a child, I probably had more experience with the abandonment part of the equation—situations that to the outside world look especially broken. Addiction or abuse can tear apart families; one or both parents can let their anger make them inattentive…. Read this in full at

SOUTHERN BAPTISTS REFUTE EFFORTS TO SOFTEN THE ATONEMENT
Christ died on the cross as a substitute for sinners, satisfying the wrath of a holy God, according to a Southern Baptist Convention resolution adopted June 13.

Meeting June 13-14 in Phoenix, messengers to the 2017 SBC annual meeting passed a resolution affirming “the truthfulness, efficacy and beauty of the biblical doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement as the burning core of the Gospel message and the only hope of a fallen race.”

Citing current voices attacking the predominant view among evangelicals of how Christ’s death atones for sin, the resolution says the denial of penal substitutionary atonement “constitutes false teaching that leads the flock away” and “leaves the world without a sin-cleansing savior.”

Two seminary professors, Owen Strachan of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Malcolm Yarnell of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, recommended a draft resolution to the SBC resolutions committee before the convention countering contemporary voices attempting to soften the image of an angry God in order to appeal to modern sensibilities…. SOUTHERN BAPTISTS HAVE LOST A MILLION MEMBERS IN 10 YEARS
Membership in the Southern Baptist Convention declined for the 10th straight year, although at a slower pace than last year, while baptisms dropped to the lowest level in 70 years, according to statistics released in advance of the 2017 SBC annual meeting June 13-14 in Phoenix.

The latest LifeWay Christian Resources Annual Church Profile reports a combined membership of 47,272 churches at 15,216,978 for the church year in 2016. That’s a loss of 77,786 members from 2015, about half a percent. Between 2014 and 2015 Southern Baptists lost 204,409 members and 236,467 the year before. WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT THE BIBLE IS GOD-BREATHED?
by Lee Strobel
Amos makes it clear that he was minding his business, shepherding livestock and caring for sycamore trees, when God called him as a prophet. Just as his calling was divinely inspired, so too is the record of his life. The Bible says that “all Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). So what do Christians believe was the process by which God created the Bible?

Dr. Daniel B. Wallace, one of the foremost scholars of New Testament Greek, fields this question by saying, “We aren’t given a lot regarding the process of inspiration, but we know the Bible wasn’t dictated by God. Look at the Old Testament: Isaiah has a huge vocabulary and is often considered the Shakespeare of the Hebrew prophets, while Amos was a simple farmer with a much more modest vocabulary. Yet both books were inspired. Obviously, this doesn’t mean verbal dictation. God wasn’t looking for stenographers but holy men to write his book.”

WALTER ISAACSON WRITES FOREWORD FOR MEMOIR BY ERIC MOTLEY
Walter Isaacson wrote the foreword for Madison Park: A Place of Hope by Eric Motley (Zondervan, November 14, 2017). Isaacson is the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute and recruited Motley to the think tank ten years ago, where he currently serves as Executive Vice President.

Isaacson writes in the foreword, “When I first met Eric Motley, I knew there must be a wonderful backstory. He was the youngest appointee in the George W. Bush White House, but he had the demeanor of a courtly collector of antiquarian books, which he happened to be…. The more I got to know Eric over the years, the more it reinforced my initial impression. What a story he must have, I thought. He does, and this inspiring and exquisitely written book tells it.” …. 3 WAYS PSALMS HELPS US TO COMBAT SELFISHNESS
Rather than expressing gratitude for the good gifts we have received from God, we often act as if we have a right to far more. We complain about the privileges God gives others and covet what belongs to them (compare James 4:1-3). The Psalms combat our bent toward selfishness by calling us to thank the Lord by:
* Rehearsing what God has mercifully done for us (Ps. 107, 136).
* Challenging us to express gratitude for what we have (Ps. 92:1)
* Reminding us of the source of our possessions (Ps. 104)…. Read this in full at

WHAT WILL FUTURE HOUSES OF WORSHIP LOOK LIKE?
by Michael J. Crosbie and Julio Bermudez
Over the past few decades the concept of a “church” – in fact, of all kinds of religious buildings – has been shifting, some might even say radically transforming, because of big changes in people’s attitudes about religion.

Surveys by groups such as Pew Research and Trinity College have shown a precipitous drop in people who belong to organized religions, particularly in the Christian and Jewish faiths and among those under 35.

Today the largest single segment of the population in the U.S. describes itself as “nones”: affiliated with no organized religious group. People of all ages are turning away from organized religion but they are not necessarily choosing to be atheists. It seems like they are looking for a more genuine, personal experience of the spiritual in their lives. Many call themselves “spiritual but not religious.” …. Read this in full at

THIS WEEK’S HYMN: COME, HOLY GHOST, GOD AND LORD!
Words: Martin Luther, 1524; composite translation from German to English
Music: 15th Century melody

Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord!
Be all Thy graces now outpoured
On each believer’s mind and heart;
Thy fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Thy light
Thou in the faith dost men unite
Of every land and every tongue;
This to Thy praise, O Lord, our God, be sung.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Thou holy Light, Guide divine,
Oh, cause the Word of Life to shine!
Teach us to know our God aright
And call Him Father with delight.
From every error keep us free;
Let none but Christ our Master be
That we in living faith abide,
In Him, our Lord, with all our might confide.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Thou holy Fire, Comfort true,
Grant us the will Thy work to do
And in Thy service to abide;
Let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by Thy power prepare each heart
And to our weakness strength impart
That bravely here we may contend,
Through life and death to Thee, our Lord, ascend.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
