YOUNG BIBLE READERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE FAITHFUL ADULTS, STUDY FINDS
Most churchgoing Protestant parents of young adults say their kids grew up to be Christians. But half of them don’t actually practice the Christian faith, their parents say.

And the biggest factor predicting their spiritual health as young adults is whether they read the Bible regularly as kids.

Those are among the findings of a new study among Protestant churchgoers about parenting and spirituality from Nashville-based LifeWay Research.

Which factors predict the highest spiritual condition? The top factor: Bible reading. Twenty-nine percent of the young adults regularly read the Bible while growing up, according to their parents. On average, that group has 12.5% higher spiritual health than otherwise comparable individuals who didn’t.

In addition, spiritual health levels are 7.5% higher on average for young adults who regularly spent time praying while growing up (28%), regularly served in church (33%) or listened to primarily Christian music (22%) than for comparable individuals who didn’t…. Read this in full at

THE STAGGERING PICTURE OF CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION: AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHNNIE MOORE
Is your perspective on the state of the church worldwide too comfortable? What do you think when you hear about the astonishing escalation in Christian persecution in the 21st century? What should you be doing about it?

Bible Gateway interviewed Johnnie Moore about his book, The Martyr’s Oath: Living for the Jesus They’re Willing to Die For (Tyndale House, 2017).

Q: Describe the staggering picture of Christian persecution today.

Johnnie Moore: “Staggering” — that’s a good word! The stories in The Martyr’s Oath will stagger you, for sure.

Like the Syrian refugees I met who’d converted to Christianity upon arriving in a neighboring country. Word got back to a jihadist family member still in Syria. He wrote them a letter saying “If you don’t return to Islam I will find you and crucify you.”

The family wrote him back, “We will not leave Jesus, and we are happy to die for him but please don’t crucify us. We are not worthy to die as our savior died.”

Stop and think about that: they’re so willing to die for him, and we struggle so hard to live for him!

A thousand such incidents happen every week!…. Read this in full at

4 LESSONS FOR CHRISTIANS FROM THE HARVEY WEINSTEIN SCANDAL
by Joe Carter
Recently the acclaimed and influential producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of serially abusing women. While the number grows daily, to date almost 30 women-including many famous actresses-have accused Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax, of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and/or rape.

The accusations have scandalized Hollywood, not merely because of Weinstein’s behavior-that was apparently an open secret-but rather because so many influential people knew and said nothing. Now the entertainment community wonders why they remained silent.

It’s tempting to mock the movie industry for such blatant hypocrisy. They frequently preach to us about their superior values; meanwhile, they were overlooking abuse in their midst. But instead of gloating we should consider what we as Christians might learn from the horrific, decades-long cover-up. Numerous lessons could be learned, but here are four specific takeaways we should consider: …. Read this in full at

TEN COMMANDMENTS MONUMENT CASE DECLINED BY SCOTUS
The US Supreme Court has declined an opportunity to revisit whether the display of religion-related monuments on government property is against the law.

The court declined without explanation Oct. 16 to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling against a Ten Commandments monument outside the Bloomfield, NM, City Hall. In lower courts, two Wiccans represented by the American Civil Liberties Union successfully challenged the five-foot monument, complaining that it constitutes the government’s establishment of religion…. IF WE DON’T USE GOD’S METHODS, WE SHOULD NOT EXPECT GOD’S FAVOR
by Clare De Graaf
A few months ago, a Christian man sat in my office angry and sad because his wife just told him she was divorcing him. “And my kids don’t respect me either,” he added, implying that his wife had turned the kids against him. “Why is God letting her do this to me?”

I’m not sure why I end up with so many guys with bad marriages sitting in my office, decade after decade. I don’t even pretend to be a marriage counselor. But, there’s a common theme that runs through the majority of their stories, and it goes something like this.

“Tell me more about your spiritual life,” I ask. Rarely do any of these men’s eyes brighten, then tell me they’re profoundly in love with God, or that they pray with their wives. Nor do they talk about their accountability group who are cheering each other on to be godly men.

“We were both raised Christians and we go to church. We’re Christians!” is about all I’ll usually get. When I ask about their last romantic getaway, or small gift they’ve surprised their wife with, or the last thing they did to show their wife how precious they are to them, they have to stop and think for a few very telling seconds…. THE MOST DANGEROUS THING LUTHER DID & OTHER FACTS ABOUT BIBLE TRANSLATION THAT TRANSFORMED THE WORLD
by Ben Witherington III
At the very beginning of the Reformation, the only Bible available was the Latin Vulgate, the Bible Jerome had produced in Latin in A.D. 380. It included both a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament and the Greek New Testament, plus Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, Baruch, some additions to the Book of Daniel, and 1 and 2 Maccabees.

This was not a book the general public was familiar with. It was not a book most individuals or families could own. There were pulpit Bibles usually chained to the pulpit; there were manuscripts of Bibles in monasteries; there were Bibles owned by kings and the socially elite. But the Bible was not a book possessed by many.

Furthermore, the Bible was not in the language of the people. Yes, the well-educated social elite could read Latin, but your average resident of England or France or Germany or Italy or Spain knew only snippets of Latin from the Mass. And indeed, often enough they garbled the snippets they knew. If you want to get a good feel for the poverty of biblical literacy in the general public in this era, read Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, written between 1387 and 1400 in Middle English. Confusion and misunderstandings of the Bible abound in Chaucer’s stories…. Read this in full at

BEING CONSTANTLY REFORMED BY THE BIBLE: A NEGLECTED REFORMATION PRINCIPLE
by Peter Adam
There is no reason to assume that what you first learned about the Bible is infallible. Or that those who first taught you the Bible were infallible. Or that the ministry that converted and mentored you was infallible! While we should deeply appreciate them and their ministry, and praise God for them, only God is infallible. And, while his word the Bible is also infallible, that infallibility does not automatically transfer to those who read or teach the Bible, however sincere and godly they are.

One of the great Reformation principles was Semper Reformanda, that is, that we need to be continually reformed by the Bible, and so we need our interpretation of the Bible to be continually reformed as well. The Bible is infallible: but our understanding of what the Bible teaches, and our application of that understanding, are not! …. Read this in full at

READ THESE FIVE VERSES ON REFORMATION DAY
One of the most important doctrines to rise from the Reformation is known as sola scriptura, which is Latin for “by Scripture alone.” The Reformers argued that the Bible is the sole, infallible authority of faith. And although the Reformation was not a single, unified movement, most of the reformers were motivated by similar desires. One of them was to restore the Bible to a central place in Christian doctrine. God’s Word was to be held above the authority of the church, they said, and Protestants around the world celebrate that belief in church every week…. Read this in full at

WHEN PASSION IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SUSTAIN
by Gary Thomas
I’ve been enjoying Angela Duckworth’s book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance and one thought in particular stuck out at me that is so relevant for marriage. Duckworth writes primarily about work and vocation in her book, but apply this thought in relational terms and you’ll see what I mean:

“What ripens passion is the conviction that your work matters. For most people, interest without purpose is nearly impossible to sustain for a lifetime. It is therefore imperative that you identify your work as both personally interesting and, at the same time, integrally connected to the well-being of others.”

Think about this in these terms: Passion without purpose is nearly impossible to sustain for a lifetime. An infatuation with no greater end than our own delight is like soap bubbles, fog, and a sunset—fascinating and ephemeral at the same time…. Read this in full at

HOW TO LIVE THE BIBLE — BEGINNING THE JOURNEY
by Mel Lawrenz
Two mistakes we can make with the Bible are 1) being ignorant of its content because we just don’t read it; or 2) being obsessed about knowing the Bible in its details; being proud of our knowledge, but ignoring the spirit of the word and not being shaped by it.

To “live the Bible” means continual life transformation through the work of the Holy Spirit using the implanted word of God. We will probe how we can develop a biblical mindset, worldview, attitude, and instincts that lead us to right living and effective witness. The Bible has shaped the history of the world. It’s the foundation of whole civilizations. It holds the keys of salvation from evil and sin. It should shape us…. Read this in full at

BIBLE INTERPRETATION: 4 CHALLENGES AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM
You probably already know that the Bible was originally written to someone else who:
1. lived a long time ago,
2. in another part of the world,
3. where they spoke a different language,
4. and had different cultural values.

A word that captures one of the greatest challenges and frustrations in Bible interpretation is distance. There are four aspects to this distance: time, geography, language, and cultural values. Being aware of these is a critical step toward interpreting the Bible correctly.

In this post, adapted from William Klein, Craig Blomberg, and Robert Hubbard’s Introduction to Biblical Interpretation online course, we’ll take a look at each of these…. Read this in full at

DISSECTING THE BIBLE BY FOCUSING ON NITS
by Steve Cable
Recently, New Testament scholar, Dr. Daniel Wallace, addressing our strong confidence in our modern translations, mentioned others presenting a false view of this situation. One example, The Bible: So Misunderstood It’s a Sin by Kurt Eichenwald, appeared in Newsweek. This article presents arguments intended to undermine the New Testament. Let’s evaluate some of these arguments to be better equipped in sharing the truth.

download-podcastEichenwald begins by parroting negative stereotypes about American evangelicals. Adding rigor to his rant, he states, “A Pew Research poll in 2010 found that evangelicals ranked only a smidgen higher than atheists in familiarity with the New Testament and Jesus’s teachings.” …. KILLING PET SINS BEFORE THEY KILL YOU
by Greg Morse
“Excuse me, can you repeat what you just said?”

I was certain I heard him wrong.

” . . . ”

“So you’re saying that if we are struggling consistently with sexual sin, we should wean ourselves off of it by sinning in moderation? If we do said sin six times a week, you’re telling us to limit it to five per week for a time, then to four, three, two, until zero?”

The leader of a highly recommended program for male Christian purity reiterated the sentiment as everyone around me nodded at the sage’s words. After all, we just heard Jimmy’s video testimony about how he went from sinning several times a day to only sinning, well, several times a month. The strategy must work.

The friend who brought me braced himself.

“With all due respect, you can’t be serious. Do you know what sin is?”

As he continued to talk, it was evident that he did not…. Read this in full at

TAKE UP YOUR CROSS, PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE, AND FOLLOW ME: 5 TIPS TO FOLLOW JESUS IN A HYPER-DISTRACTED WORLD

Maybe it has something to do with turning 40 over the summer, but I have spent a lot of time this year thinking about what it means to live a joyful life. I have become convinced that one of the greatest enemies to joyful living is our constant addiction to technology.

Because we spend so much time staring at our phones, we don’t have the productivity at our jobs that we should, we don’t spend enough time outside, we ignore our spiritual disciplines, and we spend too much of the time that we spend with people staring at our phones…. Read this in full at

THE NIGHT THE DEVIL VISITED MY DUPLEX
by Carlos Whittaker
When I was 21, I was in one of the darkest seasons of my life. I was in my fifth year at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, and I was a mess. I was a lost soul looking for any sort of validation. But I wasn’t necessarily looking to fix myself. I had a job. I hadn’t been expelled (yet). I had a condo. I had a girlfriend. People from afar still saw me as having it together. But, man, was I not together—drinking heavily whenever I could, sleeping till noon, and missing work all the time. I didn’t have a name for it, although now I can look back and see that I was suffering from heavy depression and anxiety. I was 2,500 miles away from my parents. I felt so alone. I had slowly but surely pushed away all my friends…. Read this in full at

HAS THE BIBLE REALLY BEEN CHANGED?
by Mark Ellis
Popular culture is awash in theories about alleged changes to the Bible that have corrupted its message and undermined its validity.

“That is one of the big objections that have grown in the past decade or two due to the work of Bart Ehrman, who is one of the leading critics today,” says Sean McDowell, co-author with his father, Josh McDowell, of the new edition of Evidence that Demands a Verdict.

The apologetics classic, Evidence, has been updated three times since 1972, but the last effort was 1999 — nearly two decades ago. The recent updating project involved several dozen grad students, at least 12 leading scholars from around the world, and a team from Thomas Nelson publishers…. Read this in full at

THE EVANGELICAL CASE FOR WEALTH CREATION
by Mats Tunehag
We, as leaders of Lausanne and BAM Global, representing the Wealth Creation Consultation, appreciate Ron Sider’s kind and affirmative words about the Wealth Creation Manifesto. He says that “virtually all that this manifesto says is true and important,” as well as “helpful, and much-needed.”

On the other hand, we simply cannot agree with his assertion that it is “woefully one-sided” and “ultimately fails.” It fails, Sider argues, because it “fails to provide the balanced wisdom and guidance so urgently needed.”

Now, whether any deed or statement fails or succeeds depends on what it initially sets out to do. What this statement set out to do is to reverse decades of negligence by the evangelical community on this important topic. The great omission has been the role of wealth creation-through business-for the holistic transformation of people and societies, to the greater glory of God. This was the focus of our consultation and its resultant manifesto…. Read this in full at

HUMILITY: THE ‘QUIET VIRTUE’ THAT SCIENCE SAYS CAN MAKE US HAPPY, HEALTHY AND WISE
by David Briggs
The philosopher Plato’s four cardinal virtues were wisdom, courage, moderation and justice.

In a modern age where narcissists seem to prosper in arenas from politics to social and mass media, it appears that more contemporary virtues for many individuals are fame, wealth, glory and excess.

But what may be the most countercultural of contemporary virtues – humility – is slowly gaining ground as a wealth of new research reveals the many benefits to the public good and the personal, social and professional lives of individuals.

Perhaps the most important initial contribution from scholars is to debunk what humility is not – and that is the idea of a meek, timid individual…. Read this in full at

AFRICA’S “REVERSE MISSIONARIES” ARE BRINGING CHRISTIANITY BACK TO THE UNITED KINGDOM
Fourteen years ago, Reuben Ekeme Inwe’s wife, Roselyn, had a dream. In it Inwe is preaching to a large crowd-not unusual given the young pastor had been delivering sermons in Lagos for years-but this time the faces in the audience aren’t black but white. A material like white sand falls on the building where Inwe and his fictive congregation have gathered.

“We later recognized this was snow. There’s definitely no snow in Lagos,” Inwe says, seated at a cafe in York’s old city center of winding lanes and overhanging second-story shops. Roselyn’s dream, or “vision” as Inwe now refers to it, would be the first of several signs that led the couple to uproot their lives in Nigeria and move to the north of England. Here, their mission is to spread the gospel, specifically among white British nonbelievers…. Read this in full at

HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT HUMAN DIGNITY
by Daniel Darling
As Christian parents, it is important we teach our kids the truth about who they are, who God is, and about their place in the mission of God. One important piece of this role is to teach and talk to our kids about what it means to be human and to see the humanity of others.

CALIFORNIA BECOMES FIRST STATE TO LEGALLY RECOGNIZE A ‘THIRD GENDER’
California became the first state in America to legally recognize a third gender after Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation Sunday.

State drivers’ licenses, birth certificates, and other identity documents will now allow residents to check “non-binary” rather than just male or female, the Sacramento Bee reported. The Gender Recognition Act is one of several gender-oriented bills introduced by Democrat State Sen. Scott Wiener this year. Wiener partnered with Democrat State Sen. Toni Atkins to push the bill.

Wiener is also responsible for introducing a bill that gives jail time to certain Californians who refuse to use transgender pronouns…. Read this in full at

THIS WEEK’S HYMN: SEND THE FIRE
Words: William Booth, 1894
Music: Frederick Booth-Tucker

Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
Thy blood bought gift today we claim,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
Look down and see this waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost;
We want another Pentecost,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

God of Elijah, hear our cry:
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To make us fit to live or die,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To burn up every trace of sin,
To bring the light and glory in,
The revolution now begin,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

’Tis fire we want, for fire we plead,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
The fire will meet our every need,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
For strength to ever do the right,
For grace to conquer in the fight,
For power to walk the world in white,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

To make our weak hearts strong and brave,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To live a dying world to save,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
O see us on Thy altar lay
Our lives, our all, this very day;
To crown the offering now we pray,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
